Demory Fordyce

A bit about Demory Brown Fordyce:

What year did you begin as a board member:

2018

Where did you attend college and what was your major?

I attended college at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California. My major was Liberal Studies with a Child Development minor. I hold 3 teaching credentials; General Education Multiple Subject K-12, Mild to Moderate Special Education and Moderate to Severe Special Education.

What is your current profession?

I am a special education teacher with my own tutoring business and I currently home school a 9 year old boy with Autism who has limited speech. I have taught K-5 Resource for 7 years and subbed K-12 grades at all the public schools in the Santa Ynez Valley before starting my tutoring business.

What are some of your personal hobbies?

Thankfully I have incorporated my hobbies into my time spent with my wonderful husband and two daughters (3 years old and 7 months).

I enjoy being out on our family ranch here in Los Olivos on Foxen Canyon Road. I love the outdoors. You can find me camping, hiking, golfing, mountain biking, snowboarding and skiing, surfing and relaxing at the beach. I also enjoy gardening, cooking, baking, reading and doing yoga. I hope to own a horse again in the future and take up trail riding.

What do you love about Los Olivos School District?

What is not to love?!

I graduated 8th grade from this school in 1992. The qualities I loved back then are the same as I love now. It is the small hometown feel with dedicated teachers, small class sizes and a variety of programs offered to students to help them become better people in society.

It is a second family to me. We are so fortunate to have this school in our neighborhood and I can’t wait for my daughters to attend!

What is your message to the Los Olivos School Community?

As an elementary teacher and a parent, I have a long time passion for making education better for children. That means focusing on getting the money to support school programs from the Arts to Special Education and teacher pay.

As a former student of the Los Olivos School I am honored to serve where I am alumni. Through my teaching years and my tutoring business I have been given  insight into what students need as well as what parents want for their children.

Since I have been on the board I have come to appreciate the school’s needs from a different perspective. Working with budget restraints and funding while meeting the educational needs of the students motivates me to create a school where every child is thriving.
